The Swordsman is one of the six playable classes in Chrono Odyssey, a next-generation MMORPG developed by Chrono Studio and published by Kakao Games. Known for their versatility in melee combat, Swordsmen excel at both defensive and offensive playstyles through their unique weapon switching system, allowing them to adapt to any battlefield situation.[1][2] The class offers a moderate difficulty level with a high skill ceiling, rewarding precise timing and tactical gameplay.[3]

Overview

Fighting at the vanguard of battle, Swordsmen halt enemy hordes and adapt from fierce warriors to sturdy walls as needed. They can freely wield different types of swords and excel in close combat, making them a dependable presence on any battlefield.[2] The class embodies the traditional sword-wielding warrior archetype while incorporating Chrono Odyssey's innovative dual-weapon system for enhanced tactical depth.[4] Swordsmen are considered strong all-rounders, effective in both solo and group content.[5]

Class Characteristics

Gender Availability

The Swordsman class, like all classes in Chrono Odyssey, is not gender-locked, allowing players complete freedom in character creation.[1][6]

Combat Role

The Swordsman serves as a versatile combatant capable of fulfilling multiple roles:

  • Tank: When equipped with sword and shield, providing defensive capabilities
  • Damage Dealer: When wielding a greatsword or dual blades for increased offensive power
  • Bruiser: A hybrid fighter capable of trading blows while maintaining survivability
  • Off-tank: Supporting the main tank while dealing respectable damage[4][7]

Resource System

Swordsmen utilize a unique Rage meter that rises during sustained combat and slowly decays out of battle. When Rage peaks, many core skills gain bonus damage or shortened cooldowns, rewarding extended engagements and precise timing. Some skills consume a set amount of Rage for empowered variants.[1][8]

Weapon System

The Swordsman class utilizes the weapon switching mechanic, a core feature of Chrono Odyssey's combat system. Players can equip two different weapon types simultaneously and switch between them in real-time during combat.[1] Swapping weapons resets global skill cooldowns for the incoming weapon, encouraging strategic alternation between combat styles.[9]

Available Weapons

Weapon Type Combat Profile Combat Style Description Typical Role(s)
Sword and Shield Balanced slashes plus full block and timed parry Defensive Provides blocking capabilities, parry mechanics, and increased survivability. Ideal for tanking roles and defensive playstyles. Shield stance converts stamina to flat damage reduction; perfectly-timed parries refill Rage instantly.[4][10][11] Off-tank / Crowd control
Greatsword Slow, sweeping arcs with high stagger and reach Offensive Deals high damage with powerful area-of-effect (AOE) attacks. Suited for aggressive damage-dealing playstyles. Excels at striking multiple foes but suffers during rapid-fire boss mechanics due to long recovery frames.[10][12][1] Burst DPS / Cleave
Dual Blades Very fast combos and gap-closers; limited block frames Agile Confirmed through gameplay footage, offering fast-paced combat with dual sword techniques. Generates Rage quickly thanks to high hit-count strings.[1][4][8] Sustained single-target DPS

Weapon Switching Strategy

The ability to switch between weapons instantly allows Swordsmen to:

  • Adapt to different enemy types mid-combat
  • Transition from defensive to offensive stances
  • Respond to changing battlefield conditions
  • Create combo opportunities between weapon sets
  • Execute advanced techniques like shield-bash → dual-blade flurry combos[1][9]

Combat Mechanics

Action-Based Combat

Chrono Odyssey features real-time action combat where Swordsmen must manually:

  • Execute attacks
  • Block incoming damage
  • Dodge enemy attacks
  • Parry at precise moments
  • Position themselves strategically[4][12]

The Swordsman's combat is described as "parry-based," with a Souls-like parry rhythm that rewards skillful and reactive gameplay.[5][13]

Core Abilities

While a complete ability list has not been officially released, gameplay demonstrations have revealed several Swordsman skills:

  • Buff Skill: Increases attack power or defensive capabilities
  • Ground Slam: Area-of-effect attack that damages multiple enemies
  • Greatsword Slash: Powerful slash attack when wielding the greatsword
  • Aerial Ability: Attack performed while airborne
  • Shield Slam: Forceful attack using the shield to stun enemies[5][14]

Guard & Parry System

  • Shield stance converts stamina to flat damage reduction
  • Perfectly-timed parries instantly refill the Rage meter
  • Guard-counter windows open bosses to group damage[11][13]

Time Manipulation

Like all classes, Swordsmen can utilize the Chronotector to manipulate time during combat, adding an additional layer of strategy to their melee-focused gameplay. This includes a time reverse ability shared among all classes, allowing players to correct mistakes or create tactical openings.[15][5]

Playstyle

The Swordsman class offers multiple playstyle options depending on weapon choice:

Sword and Shield Style

  • Focus on defense and survivability
  • Utilize blocking and parrying mechanics
  • Serve as the party's main tank or off-tank
  • Control enemy aggro through defensive abilities
  • Enable guard-counter windows for group damage[4][13]

Greatsword Style

  • Maximize damage output
  • Execute powerful AOE attacks
  • Trade defense for offense
  • Excel in clearing groups of enemies
  • Punishes sloppy play with long recovery frames[4][9]

Dual Blades Style

  • Emphasize speed and agility
  • Perform rapid attack combos
  • Balance between offense and mobility
  • Adapt to fast-moving targets
  • Build Rage meter quickly through high hit counts[1][8]

Group Dynamics

In party content such as dungeons and raids, Swordsmen can fulfill different roles based on their weapon loadout:

Scenario Recommended Loadout Tactical Focus
5-player dungeon Sword and Shield + Greatsword Off-tank adds, then swap to greatsword for boss burst phases[1]
Open-world PvP Dual Blades + Sword and Shield Mobility priority; use parry to peel for allies; finish with high-speed executes[3]
World-boss raid Greatsword + Dual Blades Maximize Rage uptime and exploit cleave windows during vulnerability phases[9]
Solo content Any combination Adapt based on enemy types; shield for elites, dual blades for mob grinding[12]

Character Customization

Beyond weapon choices, Swordsmen benefit from Chrono Odyssey's extensive character creation system, which includes:

  • Body type customization
  • Facial features
  • Hairstyles
  • Scars and markings
  • Various cosmetic options[6]

Class Progression

In the June 2025 closed-beta build, Swordsmen start with a one-handed sword but can acquire additional weapons early through tutorial quests and loot drops, allowing experimentation with all three weapon styles before reaching level ten.[1][16]

Development History

  • May 2023: The Swordsman class first appeared briefly in the "Next-Generation Gameplay Reveal" trailer, shown standing at the vanguard against a Void monstrosity[17]
  • May 28, 2025: Official class art and weapon list were published[18]
  • May 30, 2025: A leak article reiterated the three-weapon kit (greatsword, dual blades, sword & shield)[19]
  • June 2025: Kakao Games confirmed the Swordsman as one of only three playable classes for Closed Beta #1 (20-22 June 2025)[16]

The Swordsman was among the first classes revealed for Chrono Odyssey during the game's initial announcements. Originally, the game was planned to feature 18 different classes, but this was scaled down to six for launch, with the Swordsman remaining as one of the core classes.[20]

Reception

Early preview tier lists place the Swordsman in A-tier as a balanced melee pick with a high skill ceiling.[3] During the first closed-beta test, the class became a popular melee choice for newcomers because of its intuitive parry windows, versatile kit, and balanced stat spread.[3] Community testers praise its Souls-like parry rhythm but caution that greatsword recovery frames punish sloppy play.[13][9]
