Bounty Hunting is a core gameplay feature in Chrono Odyssey that challenges Sentinels to track down and eliminate dangerous outlaws that have spread across Setera.[1] This system combines elements of exploration, combat, and strategy, offering players a dynamic and rewarding experience that blends open-world exploration with instanced showdowns. As players progress through bounty missions, they not only earn valuable rewards but also uncover the rich lore and backstories of their targets, adding depth to their journey as bounty hunters.[2]

Overview

Bounty Hunting represents one of the core exploration and adventure activities in Chrono Odyssey, allowing players to take on missions to track and eliminate specific targets throughout the world.[3] The system was notably the most popular activity during the February 2025 Focus Group Test (FGT), highlighting its appeal to the player base.[4]

Each bounty features unique backstories and exploits, making every hunt a distinct experience. By defeating these outlaws, players not only earn rewards but also contribute to bringing justice to Setera while uncovering more about the world and the forces that threaten it.[1]

Gameplay Mechanics

Acquiring Bounty Missions

Players can access bounty missions through multiple methods:[5]

Method Description
Bounty Boards Mission boards located in towns and major settlements list daily and weekly contracts randomly pulled from the current outlaw pool[6]
Dynamic Spawns Roaming patrols and distress calls can trigger an outlaw event near the player, similar to world quests but with higher stakes
Time Portals Alternative-timeline versions of existing outlaws occasionally emerge from anomalies, featuring altered mechanics and resistances[7]

Upon accepting a mission, the target is added to the player's Chronotector interface, which provides clues and marks a general search area as a large circle on the map.[6]

Tracking and Combat

Tracking requires players to:

  • Search within the marked area, which can include hidden caves or different elevations[6]
  • Observe environmental clues (broken wagons, scorched ground) that glow when the Chronotector is activated
  • Listen for unique outlaw theme music that fades in within a 300m radius[2]
  • Use tracking skills, patience, and observation to locate targets like Ravenous Bog[4]

Combat features:

  • Each outlaw has unique arsenal of exploits and abilities
  • Unpredictable combat patterns that provide a fierce challenge[1]
  • Dynamic, action-based combat inspired by souls-like games
  • Precise timing, dodging, and strategic use of abilities required
  • Breakable parts on many outlaws that reduce armor and drop extra crafting materials[3]

PvEvP Elements

Bounty Hunting incorporates PvEvP (Player versus Environment versus Player) elements:

  • Other players can potentially appear during bounty hunts
  • PvP combat might be triggered depending on the context
  • Certain outlaw encounters occur inside PvP Zones, allowing competition for the final blow
  • Bounty quests may appear in red font, signaling PvP potential[8]
  • Carry crowd-control weapons for potential player interference[9]

Progression System

Bounty Level System

The bounty hunting system includes a comprehensive progression element where completing missions increases the player's bounty level. Progress is account-wide and caps at Level 5 during the Closed Beta Test.[1][10]

Bounty Level Reputation Required Notable Changes
1 0-99 Standard outlaw roster unlocked
2 100-249 Outlaws gain new attack patterns; +10% drop-rate bonus
3 250-499 PvP tagging enabled in contested regions; cosmetic title unlocked
4 500-799 Multiple outlaws can chain-spawn; exotic materials added to loot
5 (CBT cap) 800+ Mythic-grade outlaw variants; exclusive vanity rewards and mount skins

Note: Numerical thresholds are from Closed Beta tooltips and may change at launch.[9]

Reputation Building

Each completed contract grants:

  • Reputation points
  • Proof of Hunt tokens
  • Increased access to higher-tier bounty targets
  • Enhanced standing as a bounty hunter in Setera[1]

Notable Bounty Targets

Confirmed Targets (CBT)

Target Classification Description First Seen
Ravenous Bog Beast (Field) A massive beast that appears sluggish at first glance but is deceptively dangerous in combat. This hulking brute dishes massive burst damage once enraged. February 2025 Focus Group Test[4][2]

Additional outlaw families (humanoid, spectral, mechanical) are planned for future updates.[7]

Rewards

Completing bounty missions provides various rewards:[1][11]

  • Equipment Drops - Chance for region-themed gear with outlaw-specific affixes
  • Gear Tokens - For equipment upgrades
  • Experience Points - For character progression
  • Chronotector Cores - Used to upgrade time-manipulation skills
  • Cosmetic Rewards - Titles at Level 3, mount skins at Level 5[12]
  • Crafting Materials - From breaking outlaw parts during combat

Strategy and Tips

Tracking Strategy

Tip Description
Environmental Awareness Look for glowing clues when activating the Chronotector - broken wagons, scorched ground, and other environmental markers
Audio Cues Listen for unique outlaw theme music that intensifies as you approach (300m radius)
Vertical Exploration Check different elevations and hidden caves within the search area
Pattern Recognition Learn spawn patterns for specific outlaws to predict their locations

Combat Strategy

Tip Description
Scout First Survey the area before engaging to identify escape routes and potential PvP interference
Study Patterns Each outlaw has unique combat patterns - observe before attacking
Target Weak Points Focus on breakable parts to reduce armor and gain extra materials
Gear Appropriately Ensure equipment matches the challenge level; bring crowd-control for PvP zones
Be Patient Rushing often leads to failure against unpredictable foes

Role in World Exploration

Bounty Hunting is integral to the exploration aspect of Chrono Odyssey. By pursuing bounties, players are:

  • Encouraged to venture into different regions of Setera
  • Discovering new areas and hidden locations
  • Learning about the game's lore through target backstories
  • Encountering various challenges and opportunities
  • Contributing to the broader narrative of bringing justice to Setera[3]

This makes bounty hunting not just a combat activity but also a way to uncover the secrets of the game's vast open world while progressing through combat-focused content without participating in traditional dungeons or raids.[13]

Development History

Bounty Hunting was first revealed in the official Chrono Odyssey 17-minute "Gameplay Overview Trailer" and has been consistently highlighted as a core feature of the game's exploration content.[1]

The February 2025 Focus Group Test identified Bounty Hunting as the "most popular content loop" among testers, alongside Field Boss content. This positive reception prompted the development team to:

  • Refine clue clarity for better tracking experience
  • Improve reward pacing and progression balance
  • Expand the variety of outlaw types and encounters[2][14]

Reception

Early hands-on impressions praise the mode's mix of detective work and high-stakes boss fights. Testers particularly appreciated:

  • The blend of exploration and combat
  • Unique backstories for each target
  • The progression system's sense of accomplishment
  • Integration with the broader game world[2]

Critics have cautioned that spawn competition in open-PvP areas could frustrate solo hunters if not properly balanced.[15]

Trivia

  • The tagline for the bounty hunting system is "Join the hunt and bring justice to Setera"[1]
  • Bounty Hunting was categorized under Exploration/Adventure content alongside Labyrinths and Time Portals[3]
  • Ravenous Bog was the most frequently hunted bounty during the Focus Group Test[4]
  • The system allows players to progress through combat-focused content without participating in traditional group content[13]
  • Outlaws' theme music was specifically composed to aid in tracking, creating an immersive audio landscape[2]
